Obituary of Richard Smith

Richard Lee Smith, Sr. Richard Lee Smith, Sr. of Eagle, ID transitioned into the loving presence of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 19, 2012. He was hospitalized at Saint Alphonsus Hospital for treatment of pneumonia and recovering well until he was unexpectedly stricken by a massive cerebral hemorrhage and passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family. Red, as known to his friends was born on February 14, 1932 in Monmouth, IL. While living there he fell in love with a pretty young lady named Sandra Stewart. They were married in June 2, 1952 and nearing a 60-year Anniversary at the time of his death. They had two children, daughter Lyn and son Richard L. Jr.(Rick). Early in life Red worked for a few years running stations for Standard Oil, until they purchased their own Chevron station in Mesa, AZ. Years of hard work and long hours rewarded them with a comfortable living and retirement. Red's years of success in the competitive service station industry attests to his reputation for honesty, competence and ability to keep satisfied returning customers for 27 years. Red and Sandy retired to Eagle in 1981. During their retirement Lyn passed away March 17,1990 and they played a substantial role in raising Lyn's 2 children. Red didn't retire to rest but transitioned from station owner to being his son's employee at local corner garage Chevron Station in down town Eagle,Id., until May'98 the new store was built, North Channel Chevron also in Eagle. Red worked part time at the Convenience store until he fully retired in 2009 and started the unofficial local guys "Coffee Club" at the store and seen there daily. Red was every ones friend and greeted every customer like a neighbor and loved seeing the locals who "traded" (his words) at the Eagle stores. Red was always there to help direct customers or just take a minute to chat about sports, politics, town events or the weather. He was a healthy 80 year old man with lots of life left to give but met an untimely death and we will all miss him. Red was preceded in death by his parents Josiah P. Smith and Margaret Haynes Smith of Monmouth and his daughter Lyn of Eagle. He is survived by his wife Sandy, son Rick and sister Ada. Red and Sandy are also blessed with Grandchildren Traci, Samantha, David and Derrick. Great grandchildren, Isabella, Malia,Trace and Grayson . Funeral service is at Summers Funeral Home, 1pm Friday Feb 24, at 3629 E. Ustick Rd in Meridian, ID. Burial at Dry Creek Cemetery following the service.
