Obituary of Jerry Platt

Jerry J. Platt of Boise, ID and Waverly, IA passed away Wednesday evening, June 6 2012. He was born May 15, 1933 in Oelwein, IA to Ross Adrian and Laura M. Platt. Jerry attended Oelwein Community Schools and graduated in 1952. On August 17 1958 an over 50 year union was born as Jerry married Leah M. Anderson at the First Methodist Church in Floyd, IA. Jerry's educational accomplishments beyond high school were numerous: BA from University of Iowa 1962, Masters in Science Education from University of Virginia 1970, Medical Library Science Degree from University of Illinois 1971, and Nursing Degree from Northern Iowa Area Community College 1982. Jerry had a varied work career, including internship as medical librarian, and employment by the Chicago Great Western Railroad and Quaker Oats. He held Science teaching positions in Downers Grove, IL, Shorewood, WI, and Rova, IL. Jerry was most proud of his last fifteen years of employment as an RN at the Bartels Nursing Home in Waverly, IA. A voracious reader and avid sports fan, Jerry was also an Evening Kiwanis Club member and board member of the Bremer County Historical Society in Waverly, IA. A lifelong Christian, Jerry was a member of the Baptist Church in Charles City, IA, the Trinity Methodist Church in Waverly, IA, and most recent the Hillview Methodist Church in Boise, ID. Two sisters, Orabell J. and Jeanne H. Platt, and a brother, Ross E. Platt, preceded Jerry in death. He is survived by his sister Margaret Gonzales of Waterloo, IA and brother Ronald A. Platt of Reno, NV, sister in law Deleva Mae Platt of Independence, IA as well as his wife Leah M. Platt, two sons; Russ A. Platt of Lubbock, TX and Dana L. Platt (wife Roxanne Platt) of Meridian, ID. Jerry's grandchildren include; Sheila M., Justin A., Braden J., and Bennett G. Platt. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 12th 11:00 am at Hillview United Methodist Church in Boise. Final celebration of life with family will be held in Waverly, IA in August. His final place of rest will be Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd, IA.
