Obituary of Ferne Thomas

The beautiful life of Ferne Evelyn Carter Thomas ended today, March 9, 2013. Our world has been graced by Ferne's wonder for 92 years. She was born in Caldwell, ID, May 23, 1920 to Rex and Nellie Carter, joining siblings Georgia and Les. During her Caldwell schooling, she met the man that would make her life whole….Art Thomas. They married in 1940, moved and began their lives on the old John Thomas homestead. Here, their two sons, Wade and John were born. Although Ferne's life was filled with enormous amounts of farm work (which she loved), she managed to put a new spin on "enjoying life." Yearly, the most special happening was the Thomas week at Cox's Dude Ranch. That event has been an ever present, happy memory. Each lucky family member & neighborhood thresher always left the Thomas table with happy bellies & twirling taste buds. This is, of course, due to Ferne's brilliant cooking ability & pie making skill. There was never a square dance that Ferne didn't whirl or a Bridge/card game that didn't make her opponent cringe. Her hands were never idle as she wove magnificent beauty into her knitting, needle pointing, quilting & toll painting. In between all this talent and fun, she enjoyed a medical office career. Then there was Ferne's love for shopping…..anywhere, anytime, anyplace…..let's go! When Wade & John left their 2 room schoolhouse at Marble Front & ventured into the city schools of Caldwell, their athletic talents opened new arenas for Ferne to frolic. Every game possible, of all sports, by each son, Art & Ferne were in attendance. This is also true of their 5 Grandchildren! Art and Ferne moved to the McKenzie River in Oregon to be a part of Wade & Tuck (Sullivan) & grandchildren Amy (Jeff Herberger) & Wade's (Sharon Savage) lives. After 21 yrs and a job well done, they moved back to Boise to share the lives of John & Mary (Walker) and their children Jill (Kyle Dennis), Cindy (Kurtis Bonar) & Jeff (Nicki Johansen). All of these unions presented Ferne with the glory of 10 great grandchildren. Ferne's circle of life has been completed. Our many thanks extend to all the wonderful people at each of the 3 levels of care at Valley View and to the awesome St. Luke's Hospice. You all made this medical journey bearable. Flowers may wilt but your special charity to honor Ferne will live on. Please join Ferne's family to help us embrace the gifts she left within us all ~ ~ On Saturday, March 16, 2013, 2:00 - 4:00 pm, at the home of Wade and Tuck's, 1112 E. Crowne Pointe Dr., Eagle ID. Arrangements are under the direction of Summers Funeral Homes, Ustick Chapel.
