Max was born in Twin Falls where his father farmed. At a young age the family moved to Gooding, Idaho. After another relocation, Max completed Junior High and High School in Glenns Ferry. There he met the love of his life and future wife, Barbara Jane Trail. Max spent two years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
