Helen Elizabeth “Nellie” (Kelleher) Pieser, age 87, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on the evening of Saturday December 17, 2022. Born on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1935 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, she was raised by her mother Anna Marie (Walsh) Kelleher and father John “Jack” Kelleher on the family homestead in Tulelake, California. The middle of three children, she often shared fond memories of growing up in Tulelake where her father farmed and her mother later taught elementary school. After graduating from Tulelake High School, she attended Oregon State where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, earning her BS in Education in 1957.
She married Richard Thomas Pieser (1935-1986) on August 16, 1958 in Tulelake, California and joined him in the greater Los Angeles area where she taught elementary school and started her family. Moving to Eagle, Idaho in 1970, she became an active member of the community through her participation in many social groups and her local St. Matthew’s parish.
In addition to caring for her family, she derived great joy and fulfillment working as an elementary teacher, especially with kindergarteners. Her many years of service as a substitute teacher earned her great love and respect from the Eagle Elementary School faculty. After retiring, she volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic School and at St. Luke’s Hospital where she continued her lifelong passion and delight for working with children.
A very social person, Helen never met a stranger; she enjoyed deep conversations with anyone from lifelong friends to the grocery store clerk. Spending time with family and friends made her day. She traveled frequently, visiting family and friends around the United States as well as trips to Ireland, England, Scotland, Chile, and Mexico. As an avid fan of college football, she loved rooting on her alma mater as well as Notre Dame, from where both her husband Dick and son Tom graduated. Go Fighting Irish!
She is preceded in death by her parents Jack and Anna, her brother Dan, and her husband Dick. She is survived by her older sister Mary Ann (Kelleher) Baer, her three children Teresa (Pieser) Wirsching, Timothy Pieser and Tom Pieser, son-in-law Steve Wirsching, daughter-in-law Stacy (Howell) Pieser, and grandchildren Garrett Wirsching, Tara Wirsching, Elizabeth Wirsching, Blake Pieser, and Collette Pieser, sisters-in-law Patricia (Schwabenland) Kelleher and Judy (Pieser) Mendiola. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, their families, and lifelong friends who she loved and considered family.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to staff and community members at Garden Plaza of Valley View Independent Living for their friendship and support of Helen. Additionally, there are not enough words to express our gratitude to Nurse Mallory Tonkery. Her kind, generous spirit and outstanding care demonstrate that angels really do live amongst us.
