Please let me know when you plan to hold a memorial service for Doug. I knew he and La Donna( one of my best friends from Pan Am) for years. I always heard from him after La's passing on New Years day and we would chat a few times a year, he came to visit me in Reno about 2 years ago with his latest car purchase.
HE shared my love for the TR6,his was red mine was brown, he first saw mine when living in Honolulu.
I am heartbroken by the news. Please text me the date for the Memorial service, I wish to say good bye to my dear friend of decades.

My sincere condolences to his family and to his daughter, who had come back into his life and brought light.

We are saddened by the loss of our old dear friend and neighbor, Doug. We are so used to riding our motorcycles with Doug and him stopping by the house or we work on his Triumphs but always interesting. He is just gone. No goodbye. We thought he was visiting someone. Really shocking. He has a lot more family than we ever knew of and to you all we are sorry for your loss. If there is anything we can help you with please let us know. So sad. So very sad. Larry and Jan Strough, Randolph neighbors and high school buddy.

My father Chauncey Coe, first met Doug at Beasley's Shoe Box on 8th St. Dad was working at Antoine's and would stop in in the afternoons for a drink. He would talk to Doug about having food at lunch time. After several weeks Doug said, "Let's do it! When can you start?" Dad said, "How about Monday?" This was on a Friday. Dad started working for Doug Feb 8, 1977. I met Doug and LaDonna shortly afterwards. I remembered the bar from my childhood as my dad worked there when it was The Embassy Club. My mother worked in the building next door for a law firm and I sometimes got to visit my dad as a young child and have a Shirley Temple.
Later that summer I started working there too. LaDonna worked for Pan Am and often Doug would travel with her and I'd work his shifts. It was a great place. I met many of their friends like Bill Christianson, the character Jack Nagel all the bankers and had a crushon many of them especially Dick Forney. It was also a place to play backgammon and many good players would come in like Wink Jones and another guy whom Doug named Reno Cleveland from Cincinnati, a Rhodes Scholar working at the Statesman. Doug was always good with coming up with nicknames! I learned to play from these players. Little did I know then that Doug would become a friend for over 40 years. Many pranks were pulled on his friends but one that comes to mind was when Drew Forney paid me $5.00 for some strands of my long blonde hair. I agreed only to find out they put these strands on Glaisyer's navy blue sportcoat right before he left to go home. I've always wondered what his wife Patty said about that!
LaDonna was to me a glamorous and dear person. Always willing to help and always smiling. Years later when Doug bought the Cactus Bar I worked again for him. LaDonna was very sick and I'd get off work at Key Bank and then bartend at night so he could be home with her. And over the years in between jobs I'd pick up shifts there.
Like all of his friends I felt like Doug was a true and always loyal friend. He had become someone I talked to weekly. It has been a sad feeling when I realize I can no longer call him. Or hear his sayings like, "Don't make me come over there", "Good night Irene", " Hello the house" and many others. Often he would leave me a voice mail asking for "the full report", he was asking me if I had any local gossip!
Dear Doug,
May you now be with LaDonna and others you love that went before you. Thank you for being my friend. You made an impact on me and I have many memories of all we did, the trips we made, the stories you told and I'll miss you.

I first met Doug in late 2016 when I took over the rental home he owned. The first thing he told me was how was such a nice guy and my 6 year old hanging out with the man who was living in the home. I told him I was down and out and met the man through a motorcycle transaction.
He ordered me to meet him at Shari's restaurant for a formal meeting. We must have spent 2 hours talking and me getting the 20 questions.
We ended up knowing of much of the same people in town and hit it off. Throughout the years of our friendship he become a father to me. Always being really hard on me about life issues but at the same time doing projects together.
We would take the porsche out for a day road trip or work on his rock collection in the shop. He was almost in tears when he saw the yard I had put in at the house and repainted the garage.
This last summer I new he was in failing health and was at his home working on watering his yard and helping with some carpets in the basement. I was sitting out on the back deck and he walks out and puts two presidential Rolex watches in my hand. I was like are these for me! He said I bet you wished they were I just wanted show you up on the fake one you have on your wrist.
Doug was a funny, generous, and hard headed man but in the end he always had a good heart for my son Elvis and I and I will never forget his generosity he showed us.
Doug thank you for giving my son and I a home over our heads and many memories more that would take 50 pages to tell.
You will be deeply missed.
Love Elvis and Cody Atkinson.
