Sharon and Stephanie, I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Dave’s life was cut way to short. I was deeply saddened and shocked when I received the news of Dave’s sudden passing. It’s hard for me to believe that he is gone. He truly was an incredibly talented man with a host of passions that he used to live life to the fullest.
I have known Dave since 4th grade where we both attended Alcott Elementary school in North Denver. The first event that brought us together was 4th grade Beginning Music class. We both started screeching on the violin together. Over time we got the hang of it and were actually pretty good. A memory I will never forget was a time when we were part of the Denver City Wide Orchestra. This was an orchestra where students were selected from all Denver Public Schools to come together and play a concert. The rehearsals were held at different schools. One of the rehearsals was at Beach Court Elementary School, about 2 miles from our houses. I don’t remember the specifics but we were unable to get a ride to the rehearsal, so we decided to ride our bikes. Turns out my bike had a flat so we decided we would ride tandem on one bike. Dave peddled and I sat on the back holding both violins. Well, we hit some gravel and wiped out. We got a number of cuts and scratches and scuffed up our violin cases. Luckily our violins survived. We must have looked like Laurel and Hardy. Dave and I played in school orchestras up through the 9th grade. Our last performance was in the orchestra pit for Skinner Jr. High’s 9th grade play “Once Upon a Mattress”. We did enjoy playing in the orchestra.
High school took us on a different path. A path of being very involved in the Army ROTC Program. … Actuality, army activities started much earlier. While in elementary school, there was an army surplus store not to far from us. Dave, Tom Shea and I would buy helmets, ammo belts, leggings, vests and other stuff to dress up like army men. We would go to Berkeley Park and play “army”. We would spend days playing army.
North High School Army ROTC was a primary focus in high school. Dave, Tom Shea, John Doehling, Joe Demott, and I spent countless hours with ROTC Drill Team and Rifle Team. Our Drill team won a number of drill competitions and our rifle team a number of rifle match trophies. Dave excelled in all that he did. With all the hours he put into the ROTC program, he graduated in the top 5 of his graduating class of 501.
Dave, John and I attended CU-Boulder. Tom Shea went to the New Mexico Military Institute. Dave and I along with two others were roommates at CU Williams Village Dorm apartments. The following semester we moved off campus to Eden East apartments. Dave met Sharon at CU and the rest was history. Dave was a happy man!
Life has a way of throwing “I should’a , would’a could’a “ back in your face. It had been quite a while since I had seen Dave”. We would exchange yearly birthday greetings and Christmas cards. He had invited us to come visit a number of times, but with family and work, time seemed to just get away. It saddens me that I lost my opportunity to spend some more time with Dave.
Dave was a wonderful friend that had a large part of shaping my life, as well as many other lives. He will be missed.
Happy Birthday Dave!

I offer my deepest condolences to Sharon and Stephanie upon the loss of their beloved husband and father, David. I so wish I had taken Dave up on his many offers to visit him in Idaho. It seems everyday work and life got in the way of making that trip and now I'm left with huge regret that I did not find the time. I am also left however, with many memories of Dave that I honestly have to say are all of the good variety, a few of which I would like to share.
I've attached a few pictures taken when Dave and I spent the most time together, from our elementary school days in the early 1960s until graduation from the University of Colorado in 1977. Our school days at North High in Denver were probably the most memorable for me because our small group of friends shared school extracurricular activities that would lead a good number of us down similar roads as we grew into adulthood, from service in the military, to fire service, to police service.
Tom Shea, George Romanyshyn, Rick Montrose, Joe Demott, Bill Mentor, Dave and I all participated in junior ROTC which included activities such as drill team and rifle team (George, Dave, myself and Joe are pictured posing in our rifle team gear in one of the photos). Rifle team practice required us to remain after school while drill team and other ROTC related activities required us to arrive at school much earlier than most students. One of my fondest memories was sharing rides to school once we were old enough to drive. Seemed like every morning Tom or I would drive and pick up 4 others, including Dave. We would cram 5 bodies into a vehicle made to seat 4 - two bucket seats in front and a small bench seat in the back of Tom's '69 Bronco or my '70 Bronco. Dave, usually being the 3rd guy to get picked up, got to share that small bench seat with 2 others. It was not an especially fun ride, but it was a necessity until Dave started driving his own beloved white Chevy (Impala I think). I don't recall the model year but he babied that car just as I am sure he babied his BMWs later in life.
Following high school, George, Dave and I headed to CU, Dave and I on ROTC scholarships awarded as a result of our participation in the high school junior ROTC mentioned above. I recall George and Dave sharing a fancy dorm room in the high rise towers of Williams Village where I visited occasionally. The rock music Dave loved was always present. I recall one visit that I had to listen while Dave played his Ziggy Stardust record and watch George play an elementary Pong game that he created from scratch. Sweet George was not only handsome but really smart as well. George and Dave made great roommates as they were both academically inclined. George was soon to be displaced as this was about the time Sharon came into Dave's life, and the rest is, as they say, history.
For 6 weeks in the summer of 1976 Dave and I attended ROTC Advanced Camp at Ft. Lewis, Washington. We were there over the 4th of July holiday and together rented a car to take an exploratory drive around the Seattle area, including taking a ferry ride in Bremerton. We both missed home terribly but that trip provided an opportunity to hang out with a familiar face and gave us the juice to finish out the rigorous training. Must have helped in the long run as we both received Regular Army Commissions upon our graduation from CU in '77,
Dave went on to do many great things during his time in the Army and in civilian life after the Army and I am proud to have called him friend. Although we did very little together after college, outside of a big game hunt into Alaska with Tom and my oldest brother which fatefully coincided with 9/11/2001, he remains in my memory as one of but a few true friends for life.

Dear Sharon and Stephanie,
Our hearts go out to both of you for your sudden loss. Dave was an incredible guy as you surely know. I have many memories of Dave dating all the way back to grade school. I’d like to share some of my memories of Dave, they still bring a smile to my face even today. Back when we were kids, probably 10 or 12, I remember visiting Dave’s house for the first time. One of the first things I noticed was a dictionary, not your usual dictionary but one on a stand and huge like you’d see in a library. It was open, I asked what was with this big dictionary. I remember Dave said that his Mom made him discover a new word every day, it’s definition and use. Wow, weird! I thought, glad I don’t have to do that! Yes, Dave’s Mom started early with Dave’s education. Spring ahead to Dave’s first Army assignment, we were both stationed at Fort Eustis, VA. Visiting Dave and Sharon, Dave picked up a book our year-old son had with us. I recollect it was a farm book showing cows, pigs, etc. Dave began to read it out loud. Deviating from the book he said, that’s not a cow – those are Guernsey and Jersey cows! Like a one year old cares, but that was just like Dave, always sharing his infinite knowledge. The last memory I’ll leave you with is our reunion hunting trip to Alaska the week before 9/11, Three of us school buddies are in the attached snapshot. Dave, John Doehling, another North Denver alumni, along with his brother and myself were deep in the Alaska bush hunting big game. We slept in a ramshackle cabin and I awoke to a low growl, I woke John who was next to me for fear that we were being visited by a bear. After a few moments of quiet anticipation listening for the bear, we heard it again. There was no bear, it was Dave snoring like a bear! That week we spent with Dave was a wonderful memory. We’ll miss him.
Sincerely,
Tom and Roxanne Shea
