When I came back to Santa Maria High after failing a month at Lompoc, I had to talk Mr. Clifford into letting me take both history classes simultaneously to make up for lost time. He made me promise to get no less than a B in both classes, and then he said ok. He wasn't the easiest teacher, but certainly one of the best! My condolences to his family. God bless him, and all of you.

My condolences to the Clifford Family. I knew Brother Clifford, as I affectionately called him, from Church, High school and the neighborhood. My family grew up only a block away from the Clifford family. I have many fond memories of the entire family, especially Brother Clifford. I remember him declaring once that he was going home to eat a half gallon of ice cream while watching John Wayne movies. I loved Ice cream and John Wayne too, so that sounded really good at that time. Besides P.E., I only enjoyed one other subject in school, history. That was due in large part because of Floyd Clifford's demeanor, attitude and antics in the classroom. I remember dozing off in his class when me and the entire class was awakened with a loud bang. Floyd had swung his pointer stick smacking the large canvas like map that he was apparently showing to the class. We all woke up to him saying, "dang, missed that fly again!" I don't think any of us saw the fly, but we were aware Mr. Clifford did not want us falling asleep in his class. While taking a test in his class, I remember struggling to choose an answer to one question. I do not remember asking for help (I could have), but as Clifford walked past my desk, he must have sensed my struggle and leaned down pointing to the correct answer saying, "if I were taking the test, I would choose that answer!" I thought to myself, what a cool teacher. Anyone who knew me could tell you continuing later in life in pursuit of higher education was not in the cards for me. Thanks to teachers like Floyd Clifford, that is exactly what I did. Thank you Floyd for the good man you are and for being a positive influence in my life. Until we meet again, may God bless your family and give them strength to carry on in this "fight for right" we call earth life! Best Wishes, Eric Timmons

Mr. Clifford was an awesome history teacher for me in high school but even better, my husband mike and I were lucky enough to spend time with the Clifford family while we were in high school and we have wonderful memories of being teased and parented by both Mr and Mrs Clifford. Our thoughts, prayers and the fondest memories of times past go out to Gaylen, Cole, Cammie and Matt!

I taught with Al at Santa Maria High School. He was so popular with his students and his humor was always appreciated. I remember He would leave the faculty meetings with a facetious grin as if to say, “oh sure, that is what we need to do to improve our school!” He volunteered at the fair in the summer and was always on the football field interacting with kids. I think he drove a classic El Camino? All will miss him.
