As a child, I was convinced that Ethel Chapman was the epitome of glamour, grace and style. It was no surprise that her son-in-law, Tom, was also in that same mold. I always looked forward to seeing Tom's beaming smile as he came across our bridge over Sylvan Creek to enjoy a toddy with my father, Carl. Tom and Joan (and Ethel) will always be among my warmest thoughts of summer in McCall. Dennis Shaver

On behalf of the entire membership of The Royal Sylvan Beach Yacht Club, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the extended family for the loss of this wonderful man. He served the RSBYC as one of the Commodore’s Amanuensis, as ably as is possible, and we extend a hearty salute to you Tom as you leave your earthly duties behind. You have been preceded by and will be followed by, a host of many friends. Ahoy and happy sailing! Fondly, your friends and family at RSBYC

I met Tom and his dear wife very briefly in a medical setting a few years ago. I was touched by their obvious friendship and love for each other, and have never forgotten either of them. What a wonderful obituary and tribute to a fine man. I am sure he is thrilled to be with his sweet Joan again.

I didn’t know Mr.Cooney, but wanted to share some information about my father Earl Winn. He also was in the Navy during WWII, served on landing craft, fought in North Africa, in Italy at Salerno, and at the Normandy invasion, though he landed at Utah beach rather than Omaha. I doubt that they knew each other, there may be thousands of men with the same experience. But I wanted you to know that I consider your Dad and mine to be heroes.
