Obituary of Dorothy Alice Kersey

Dorothy Alice Kersey was born on March 30, 1930 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, the third child of John R. and Alice M. Kemper.

Dorothy was raised on the family farm at Red Rock, Arizona attended grades one through six in nearby Marana, Arizona and completed high school in Florence Arizona in 1947.

Dorothy entered nurses training after high school at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson and graduated in 1950. She worked as a graduate nurse at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, receiving her Registered Nurse diploma in December, 1950.

When the opportunity arose, Dorothy was accepted as a Civil Service nurse at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and was there until the close of the Korean War, where many of the returning wounded were cared for. Afterward, she worked at the Phelps Dodge Hospital in Douglas, Arizona.

She then returned to Tucson, nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital and becoming Director of nurses in the surgery there. She later worked at the Tucson Medical Center.

In 1960 Dorothy met Verl Kersy who was a Rexall Drug Company Sales Representative. They married on December 15, 1962 and moved to Boise.

Dorothy’s nursing career continued in Boise where she worked at the old St. Alphonsus Hospital in downtown Boise.

She later helped open Boise Convalescent Center as Director of Nurses and also worked at Grand Oaks Nursing Home as Director of Nurses.

Dorothy then joined the Boise School District, teaching Health Occupations.

Dorothy then spent twelve years with the Meridian School District as a school nurse under Director of School Nurses, Tamara J. Collins.

Dorothy retired in 1992 and had the great pleasure of working part-time as Office Nurse to Dr. Thomas R. Huntington.

Dorothy is survived by husband Verl L. Kersey, niece Sheila Julian, nephew Ron Kemper and his wife Ann of Arroyo Grande, California and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The family gives grateful thanks to the Encompass Hospice Doctors, Nurses, and the many caregivers.  A visitation at Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock Street, will be held from 1:00pm to 2:45pm on Saturday, September 29, 2018 with a burial service at Morris Hill Cemetery immediately following the visitation.
