Obituary of Gary Brewington

Brigadier General Gary "Brew" Brewington, 76, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8. He was with his sons, Alan, 43, and Tyler, 40, both of Boise, and surrounded by photographs of the airplanes he loved to fly during his brilliant career with the Idaho Air National Guard. General Brewington began his time with the Guard in 1961. Over the years he served his country in a variety of different capacities, including Squadron Operations Officer; Commander, 190th TRS; Chief of Standardization and Evaluation; Chief of Safety, Deputy Commander, Operations; and Commander, 124th TRG. In 1994 he became Chief of Staff, responsible for the training and combat readiness of all units in Idaho's Air National Guard, and he was promoted to general in March 1996. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with four oak leaf clusters. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Albert, his mother, Ruth, and his brother, Clark. In addition to his sons, he is survived by a squadron of devoted and faithful friends. A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Idaho Humane Society.
